HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese top chess player Le Quang Liem only gained two points in the rapid discipline at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2014 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, yesterday.
Liem, who has an Elo rating of 2724, won one, tied two and lost two matches. With a total point of six after two days of competition, defending world blitz champion Liem slipped to the 26th position out of 113 players.
Meanwhile, Liem's teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, with an Elo rating of 2660, played rather successfully. He accumulated 3.5 points after five matches. He defeated Nikita Vitiugov of Russia and Nikita Vitiugov of Austria, and was able to notch draws against Anand Viswanathan of India, Movsesian Sergei of Armenia and Liem.
After 10 matches, Son had 6.5 points to move to the 11th place.
Carlsen Magnus of Norway, who has an Elo rating of 2881, temporarily took the lead with eight points.
The rapid championship will consist of 15 rounds to be held in the first three days, followed by 21 rounds of the blitz championship.— VNS
