HA NOI (VNS)—Viet Nam's No 1 chess player Le Quang Liem yesterday recorded one of the biggest victories of his career to pull off a shock win over the world No 4 to advance to the fourth round of the Chess World Cup in Tromso, Norway.

Liem defeated Russia's No 1 Alexander Grischuk, who has an Elo of 2785, 2.5-1.5 after two tiebreak games, caused by a 1-1 draw after the first two legs of the third round.

The victory is a landmark for Vietnamese chess as this is the first time a Vietnamese player has ever made it through to the fourth round of the world's biggest chess event. — VNS
