HA NOI (VNS)- Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem will take part in the Asian Continental Individual Chess Championships in Manila, the Philippines, next month.
It's the last chance for the world No 27 seed to win and to compete at the World Cup in Norway later this year.
The Asian tournament will kick off on May 17 and conclude 10 days later. Masters who enter top six will join 122 other participants at the World Cup which is a single-elimination competition, played between August 10 and September 5, in Tromso City.
Previously, teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Wesley So of the Philippines pocketed last two tickets from the Cup's Asian qualifying round-3.3 zone.
In other chess news, Women's International Master (WIM) Vo Thi Kim Phung is in second place in the ranking table at the ongoing Asian Juniors Chess Championships in Sharjah, the United Arabia Emirates.
Phung shares 3.5 points with the current leader, WIM Hakimifard Ghazal of Iran, after three wins and one draw but ranks second because of lower tie-break points.
No 1 seed WIM Nguyen Thi Mai Hung dropped to fourth place although she also had 3.5 points.
On the men's side, FIDE Master Tran Tuan Minh, the only representative from Viet Nam pocketed 2.5 points, ranking at 12th.
