HA NOI (VNS)— Vietnamese badminton players have had their worst showing in the six-year history of Viet Nam's largest badminton championships, Viet Nam Open 2013.

Following repeated defeats, the country has no players in the single's events after the second round matches yesterday. In the men's singles, Nguyen Dinh Tuan Kiet and Pham Cao Cuong, the only home players in the second round, failed to cope with the power and skills of their opponents and quickly lost their matches.

While Kiet lost to sixth seed Son Wan Ho of South Korea 21-11, 21-12 after just one half hour, Cuong was also outplayed by third seed Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong in only 30 minutes.

In the women's singles, young hopeful Le Thu Huyen showed that she had all the makings of a future star with a fighting performance against seventh seed Hsu Ya Ching of Chinese Taipei.

After losing the first set at 21-18, Huyen fought back to win the second set 21-15 to level the match, but in the decisive match, Hsu bettered Huyen to clinch the set at 21-17 and seal the match.

Not only did singles players perform poorly, but players in the doubles events failed to match up to their counterparts.

In the men's doubles, the country also does not have any representatives, as duo Duong Bao Duc and Nguyen Hoang Nam succumbed to the Malaysian pair, Chooi Kah Ming and Teo Ee Yi, in straight sets 21-15, 21-19.

Meanwhile, top seeds continued showing their power by torturing their opponents to march to the next round.

Top-seeded Alamsyah Yunus of Indonesia easily beat Soong Joo Ven of Malaysia to reach the third round, while the second ranked Tan Chun Seang of Malaysia, also had an easy win over Chavapat Tochareonbodee of Thailand. — VNS
