HA NOI (VNS) — Marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh retained his World No 1 ranking in the men's 10-metre air pistol category, according to the May ranking announced by the International Shooting Sport Federation.
Vinh retained his rank because he set a new world record in the men's 10-metre air pistol category at the 2014 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in the US on March 29. With a total of 202.8 points, Vinh beat the old record of 202.3 points set by the Olympic champion Pang Wei from China.
The achievement has helped Vinh become the second Vietnamese to break a world record in the country's shooting history, after late marksman Tran Oanh who had set a world record in 1953.
Jin Jongoh of South Korea and Amore Andrea of Italy were the runners-up with 981 and 796 points, respectively.
Vinh has also jumped one spot to claim the World No 6 rank in the men's 50-metre pistol event, with 534 points. World No 1 is Matsuda Tomoyuki of Japan with 1350 points and Wang Zhiwei of China is World No 2 with 1195 points. — VNS
