HA NOI (VNS) — Top Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh entered the third round of the men's singles event at the US$50,000 Mexico Grand Prix this morning (December 17).
World No 42 Minh defeated the number four seed and world No 30 Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 21-19, 21-19 in the second round in 36 minutes. In the third round, Minh will meet Canada's Martin Giuffre, world No 78.
Earlier, unseeded Minh crushed Juan Carlos Garcia Tapia of the hosts 21-2, 21-5 in the first round.
In the first round of the women's singles event, world No 57 Vu Thi Trang beat world No 120 Melinda Sun of Australia. Trang will face the number seven seed and world No 18 Sayaka Sato of Japan in the next round. — VNS
