HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam's top badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh, advanced to the second round of the men's singles at the Yonex Open Chinese Taipei yesterday.
Olympian Minh, world No 35, needed 52 minutes to defeat Andre Kurniawan Tedjon of Indonesia 15-21, 21-8, 21-12 in the first round.
The HCM City-born player Minh will meet Hu Yun, seed No 9 of Hong Kong, who just crushed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia, in the next round.
On the women's side, world No 49 Vu Thi Trang lost to Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-12, 21-11.
After the tournament, Minh and Trang will move on to compete in the 2015 World Badminton Championships, scheduled for August 10-16 in Jakarta, Indonesia. — VNS
