Minh wins in Denmark badminton tournament

HA NOI (VNS) — Nguyen Tien Minh advanced to the second round of the Yonex Denmark Open yesterday after beating Takuma Ueda, 22-20, 21-10.

The Vietnamese needed only 43 minutes to defeat his Japanese rival in the men's singles in Odense City.

This is Minh's second victory against Ueda. Two years ago, he won the Viet Nam Open title after beating Ueda, 21-14, 21-19, in the final match. Minh, ranked 24th in the world, will face Houwei Tian of China in the next round.

Vu Thi Trang, Viet Nam's female representative, was sent home after losing in the qualification round of the women's singles category last Wednesday.

Trang beat Simone Prutsch of Austria, 21-14, 26-24, in the first round before losing, 14-21, 21-16, 21-15, to Kati Tolmoff of Estonia in the second.

The Denmark Open is offering a US$600,000 prize for winners and will wrap up on Sunday. —VNS
