AN GIANG (VNS) — The Mount Sam heritage site in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang has been included in a national list of tourism destinations.

Located in Vinh Te Commune in Chau Doc Town, the place boasts picturesque landscapes and a slew of architectural and cultural attractions.

A spiritual festival to venerate the Holy Lady of Mount Sam was last month recognised as a national intangible heritage.

Legend has it that Ba Chua Xu was a young girl who was ravished to death. After her death, her soul helped good people and chastised bad ones, and to express gratitude to her, villagers called her Ba Chua Xu and have held the festival in the fourth lunar month to worship her and pray for good health and life.

The festival, which became a national event in 2001, is celebrated every year from the 22nd to the 27th of the fourth lunar month, and attracts some four million visitors. — VNS
