HA NOI (VNS) — Top Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam suffered a surprise defeat in the first round of the US Open's junior circuit boys' singles early on September 8 (Ha Noi time).
Nam, seeded 12th, lost to Dennis Shapovalov of Canada 3-6, 4-6.
Shapovalov is 2151st in the world rankings, while Nam is 1055th.
Nam and his partner, Japan's Akira Santillan, the number four seed, will next meet Tim Sandkaulen of Germany and Mate Valkusz of Hungary in the first round of the boys' doubles category.
At other Grand Slam tennis tournaments, Nam had entered the second round of the Australian Open and the third round of the French Open. Nam was knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon, but won the boys' doubles title there. — VNS
