HA NOI (VNS)— A collection of true stories from the life of the late Nguy Nhu Kon Tum (1913-91), one of the founders of the geophysics sector in Viet Nam, has been launched to celebrate his 100th birthday anniversary.

The book, compiled by Tum's students, colleagues and family and published by the Ha Noi National University Publishing House, is entitled Professor Nguy Nhu Kon Tum.

It introduces views of Tum in different roles: human being, scientist, educationalist and manager.

Born in Thua Thien Province, Tum graduated MSc in physics and chemistry at Sorbonne University, France. He was a post-graduate student in the laboratory of Nobel Chemistry winner Frederic Joliot-Curie.

Tum was the first principal of the University of Ha Noi where he worked from 1956 to 1982. His contributions helped make it a leading university in Viet Nam in the 20th century.

Tum led the first delegation of Vietnamese scientists to the International Geophysics Conference in Moscow in 1957. He published research papers on modern physics and wrote textbooks at different levels.

At his 100th birthday celebration in Ha Noi yesterday, attended by students, friends and colleagues, Tum was posthumously awarded the Order of Great National Unity in recognition of his contributions to the cause and education development. — VNS
