HCM CITY — Nguyen Thanh Ngung set a new national record in the men's 10,000m walk at the 19th HCM City International Track and Field Championships – Viet Nam Open 2012 yesterday.
The Da Nang athlete finished in 44:22.08 to go past his own record of 45:17.51 set at the same tournament last year. The effort won him a gold medal.
Nguyen Van Tu of Nghe An was second in 46:41.32 while Vo Xuan Vinh of Da Nang finished third in 46:54.33.
Another national record was set yesterday in the women's javelin when Bui Thi Xuan of the Military threw 49.80m, bettering the 48.86m thrown by Ca Thi Phong of Son La in 2010.
Saowalak Pettong and Natta Nachan, both of Thailand, came second and third with 46.70m and 45.07m, respectively.
Nguyen Van Hung won the men's long jump with a leap of 7.46m while Truong Thanh Hang easily took the gold in the women's 800m event in a time of 2:05.35.
South Korea also claimed two gold medals in the morning with Ku Yun-hoi finishing first in the men's javelin with a throw of 69.40m and Kim Jae-youl crossing the finish line in the men's 800m with a time of 1:53.92.
Nguyen Van Lai of the Military won the men's 5000m event.
Earlier, on the first day, Nam Dinh dominated the men's 100m event with Tran Thanh Trung and Nguyen Van Si finishing one-two, with Trung winning in a time of 10.672.
The women's 100m gold went to Nguyen Thi Thuy of Ha Noi, who finished in 12.06 seconds, 0.04 seconds ahead of Malaysia's Selvaretnam Komalam Shally.
Soc Trang's Le Thi Lai won a gold medal in the women's shot put while Hussein Adi Alifuddin of Malaysia took the men's gold with a throw of 16.26m.
Tran Thanh Binh of Bac Lieu won the men's high jump while Adabi Siti Zubaidah won the women's long jump with a leap of 6.09m.
Nguyen Thi Phuong won the women's 5000m event. — VNS
