HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese track-and-field athletes won two bronze medals at the Taiwan Open Athletic Championships, which wrapped up in Taipei Municipal Stadium on May 16.
Nguyen Thi Truc Mai finished third in the women's long jump with a jump of 6.06m.
Former Asian champion Marestella Torres of the Philippines jumped 6.53m, the second best jump in Asia in 2015, to win a gold medal. Wan Ju Wen of Chinese Taipei edged out Mai to finish in second place with 6.07m.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Thanh Nhan took third place with 2.10m in the men's high jump. Hsiang Chun-Hsieng of Chinese Taipei won a gold medal when he cleared 2.25m and Seong Mo Kang of South Korea finished in second place with 2.13m.
Chiaying Lin of Chinese Taipei won the women's shot put event with a throw of 16.44m.
In the men's 4x100m relay final, the Chinese Taipei team beat the Asian champion Hong Kong team with a performance of 39.26 seconds, second fastest in Asia in 2015. Meanwhile, Hong Kong settled for second place with a score of 39.44 and Indonesia finished in a close third with 39.47 seconds.
The two-day event provided a good opportunity for Vietnamese athletes to sharpen their skills and gain valuable experience in preparation for the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore next month. — VNS
