Peformers celebrate spiritual singing

A performance of chau van (spiritual singing) featuring a variety of artists will be held by the Viet Nam Club for Chau Van Preservation in Ha Noi tonight.

HA NOI (VNS)— A performance of chau van (spiritual singing) featuring a variety of artists will be held by the Viet Nam Club for Chau Van Preservation in Ha Noi tonight.

Basic chau van tunes will be introduced together with popular performances of hau dong (mediumship) rituals of the Mother Goddesses religion. It's popular throughout the country, but the northern province of Nam Dinh is considered as its birthplace.

Folk performance art was first created during the Tran dynasty (1225-1400) and became popular at festivals and rituals. It was featured at temples and pagodas as people believed that it was a useful way to connect to the Mother Goddesses and other gods.

It has now been submitted to UNESCO in the hope it will be recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Tickets are available at L'Espace, 24 Trang Tien Street, Ha Noi.-VNS
