HA NOI — Truong Thi Phuong won a gold medal at the 2015 Asian Canoeing Championships in Indonesia on November 5, becoming the first-ever Vietnamese competitor to win it.

Phuong, who is only 16 years old, took the lead in the women's C1-500m category.

At the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore in June, the girl won the first gold medal for Viet Nam in canoeing in the C1-200m event.

Earlier, Vu Thi Linh and Do Thi Thanh Thao ranked seventh out of 14 teams in the women's K2-500m event, ahead of the Singapore duo who won the gold medal at the 28th SEA Games.

About 500 participants from 27 countries are competing at Lake Jakabaring Sport City, Palembang.
