HA NOI (VNS) — Various cultural activities will be organised nationwide in November to celebrate the 250th anniversary of eminent poet Nguyen Du.

Director of the central Ha Tinh Province's Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Bui Duc Hanh yesterday said the government of the province, where the poet was born, will coordinate with relevant agencies to organise seminars and contests, distribute publications about Nguyen Du and his book, entitled The Tale of Kieu, and shoot documentary films on the poet's life, career and family.

Several international researchers and authors will attend the seminar.

The Nguyen Du culture and tourism week will be held in Ha Tinh Province and several other locations in the country.

"It's an occasion to praise the poet's talent and devotion to Vietnamese and world culture," Hanh said.

"This year the celebration will be organised at the national level to honour and promote Vietnamese culture and literature," he said.

Du (1765-1820) was recognised by the World Peace Council as one of the world's cultural celebrities in 1965.

He left behind several valuable works, including The Tale of Kieu, the story of a woman dealing with the cruel blows of fate. The masterpiece has been translated into more than 20 languages and is cherished for its creativity, independent thinking and distillation of Vietnamese culture. Throughout his work, Du pondered love and the human heart. — VNS
