HCM CITY — Vietnamese tennis players were defeated in both singles and doubles at the Futures Tennis Tournament now being held at the Tanimex Tennis Club in Tan Phu District.
The Men's Futures is considered an indispensable door for anyone that wishes to become a professional tennis player.
In the morning's singles last-16 match, Do Minh Quan lost 0-2 to taller and stronger Jack Carpenter of Great Britain after nearly two hours in a scorching match.
With big serves and heavy forehands, Carpenter quickly pushed Quan on defence and won breakpoints in the sixth and eight games to clinch the set at 6-2.
The second set was tighter when Quan played harder as Carpenter seemed to be affected by the heat. Quan pushed Carpenter throughout the set.
The Briton struggled in his service games, reaching deuce many times, but Quan was unable to capitalise before losing the game to Carpenter. When the score of the second set was 5-5, Carpenter hit the ball harder, making it more difficult for Quan.
Carpenter won his service game to make it 6-5 and kept up his momentum in the 12th game to have three match points. Quan saved one before surrendering the set at 7-5 and the match at 6-2, 7-5.
"I am not happy with some decisions made by the referee, but Carpenter deserved to win," Quan said. Carpenter said he had been affected somewhat by the heat. "But I thought I played at the same level throughout the match," he added.
In the doubles semifinal match in the afternoon, Quan partnered with Le Quoc Khanh. They were defeated by N Sriram Balaji and Rohan Gajjar of India in straight sets. — VNS
