BERLIN (VNS) — Screened in Kino International Cinema for the first time on Tuesday night, Vietnamese director Nguyen Phan Quang Binh's film Quyen (Farewell, Berlin Wall) was appreciated by the audience in Berlin, Germany.
About 600 invitees, mostly Vietnamese overseas people, attended the screening of the film that has been adapted from the novel of the same name by writer Nguyen Van Tho.
The film tells the story of a Hanoian girl named Quyen (played by actress Vu Ngoc Anh), who crossed the Russian border into Germany with her husband, seeking the "promising land".
The perilous journey turned into a 10-year adventure for the couple, with a lot of bitterness and separation in a foreign land.
Quyen experiences unforgettable moments, besides meeting many men who give her a lot of affection. One of them is Hung (played by actor Tran Bao Son), a cold-blooded member of the underworld whose mission is to lead people across the border into Germany.
Besides depicting a peculiar fate, Quyen also shows the struggles of the Vietnamese communities during the 1990s.
The attractions of the film are not only the breathtakingly beautiful scenes filmed on the snow-covered Mountain Zugspitze or the beautiful scenes shot in Berlin, but also the scenes showing the plight of Vietnamese communities after the fall of the Berlin wall, an event that greatly influenced the lives of thousands of overseas Vietnamese people.
Director Binh said he decided to pursue the film project after reading the novel entitled Quyen, and especially after listening to stories about the struggles and plight of Vietnamese people in Germany during that difficult period.
He said his film might be the first step in exploiting the topic further.
Binh said Quyen was also expected to tell about the pain, losses and sacrifices suffered by Vietnamese women, which would help later generations to develop mutual understanding and Vietnamese people in the country to understand their compatriots abroad better.
Besides director Binh, lead actor and actress Tran Bao Son and Ngoc Anh, actor David Tran and many junior actors also attended the introduction of the film in Berlin.
After Berlin, the VND22-billion (more than US$1 million) film will be shown in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, and then in all cinemas nationwide on June 19.
Also on the same day, the consulate-general of Viet Nam in Frankfurt will organise an introduction to Quyen, an event that will be part of the official activities to celebrate 40 years of Viet Nam- Germany diplomatic ties. — VNS
