HA NOI (VNS)— Seven new national records were established as Ha Noi came out on top at the  National Athletics Championships that wrapped up yesterday in HCM City.

Ha Noi-based athletes enjoyed roaring success at the annual tournament, winning 12 gold medals, six silvers and nine bronzes.

The Military team claimed second place with seven gold medals, seven silvers and four bronzes, while Nam Dinh took third place with four gold medals, four silvers and four bronzes.

Some provinces made significant improvements this year, including Thanh Hoa who exceeded their goal by winning two gold medals, four silvers and two bronzes, despite the absence of key athletes who are training overseas.

The other positive side to be taken from the tournament were the seven records that were broken during the three-day event at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCM City.

The latest was set by triple jumper Tran Hue Hoa of HCM City. Hoa recorded a leap of 13.95m to surpass her own previous record of 13.76m set at the Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia two years ago.

The other records were set in the men's long jump, the men's 4x200 relay, the women's 4x200m relay, the women's javelin, the women's hammer and the men's pole vault.

On Tuesday, "Iron Man" Vu Van Huyen of the Military team set a new pole-vault record.

Huyen's 4.90m jump beat his previous national record of 4.85m set last year.

Pham Thi Thanh Truc of Vinh Long Province also achieved a new record in the women's hammer throw with a result of 47.77m.

Quang Ngai Province-born Pham Thi Binh proved her strength in the 10,000m, taking the lead from the beginning and finishing about 200m ahead of the runners-up with a time of 36 min 27.31sec. — VNS
