HCM CITY (VNS) — Renowned composer Phan Huynh Dieu passed away at the Thong Nhat Hospital in HCM City yesterday. He was 91.
Dieu was born in Da Nang in 1924. He composed his first song when he was 16, and became a member of the Viet Nam Composers' Association in 1957. He then moved to HCM City after liberation in 1975, becoming a member of the city's Music Association.
He wrote more than 100 songs depicting his love of life and the country. One of his famous songs is Doan Ve Quoc Quan (Vietnamese National Army) composed in 1945 after the August Revolution.
In 2000, Dieu was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art for his contributions to the country's music.
His funeral will be held in two days from today at the Southern Funeral Parlour of the Ministry of National Defence in Go Vap District in HCM City. — VNS
