Seven records set on opening day of diving championship


Seven records were broken at the curtain-raiser of the National Short-Course Swimming and Diving Championships in Hue yesterday.

HUE (VNS) — Seven records were broken at the curtain-raiser of the National Short-Course Swimming and Diving Championships in Hue yesterday.

Tran Thi Huong of Thai Binh set a record and got a gold medal in the women's 50m double fin for snorkeling with a time of 23.34 seconds. She surpassed the old record set by Vo Thi Dai Trang of Thanh Hoa in 2013 (22.82sec). Huong also was record holder.

Trang also broke her own record, but her time of 22.62sec only got her a silver medal.

Vo Thi Kieu Oanh of Quang Ninh ranked third with 22.69sec.

Nguyen Thi Lan Vy from Da Nang set a new record in the women's 100m snorkeling, 42.95sec, shaving just a hundredth of a second off the previous record (42.96sec), set by Duong Thi Huyen Trang in 2011.

Hanoian Nguyen Trung Kien finished first in the men's 100m snorkeling event with 36.09sec, breaking his own 2013 record of 36.35sec.

Da Nang's Dang Thi Minh Thuy also posted her name in the record-setter list yesterday when she smashed the women's 400m snorkeling event in 3min 30.83sec, faster than Duong Thi Huyen Trang's 2012 record, 3min 31.80sec.

HCM City's Luu Nguyen Duc Tam took home a gold and a new record in the men's 1,500m snorkeling with a time of 13min 10.37sec.

He shaved 5.02sec off Bui Dinh Kha from Thai Binh's record time, set in 2011.

Da Nang and HCM City also broke two records in both the women's 400m snorkeling relay and the men's 400m snorkeling relay.

Da Nang took the lead in the diving event, with three gold medals and one bronze, while HCM City was breathing at their neck with two golds, one silver and three bronzes.

Thanh Hoa were in third place with one gold and three silvers.

The diving event will close tomoorow and the swimming event is set for March 27 to 31. — VNS
