HA NOI (VNS) — World-level marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh of Viet Nam has won the right to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Vinh was placed fourth with 150.3 points in the men's 50-metre pistol event at the International Sport Shooting Federation World Championships' finals in Spain.

South Korea's Jin Jog-oh was placed first with 192.3 points, India's Rai Jitu came second with 191.1 points and Chinese Pang Wei was placed third with 172.6 points.

Three-time Olympic champion Jin's total score of 583 is a new

world record. The previous record was 581, set in 1980 by the then USSR's Alexander Melentiev at the Moscow Olympic Games. Melentiev's score was the longest shooting record that lasted 34 years before Jin shattered it in Granada, Spain.

As per the regulations, all top four shooters have qualified for the next Olympic Games. It will be the second time in a row that Ha Noi's Vinh will compete at the largest global sporting festival.

Vinh had been ranked fourth at the London Olympics in the same category. He will join the national team who are training in South Korea for the 17th Asian Games beginning next week. — VNS
