DA NANG (VNS) — Singapore's Eu Jin Jonathan Tan broke three records and won two gold medals on the final day at the Southeast Asia Age-Groups Swimming Championships.
Singaporean swimmers smashed seven out of 14 records on the final day at Da Nang Swimming Club yesterday and dominated the championship with a total of 41 gold, 41 silver and 28 bronze medals, ahead of Viet Nam, who came second with 29 golds, 24 silvers and 21 bronzes.
Indonesia ranked third in the medal table, bagging 15 golds, 23 silvers and 18 bronzes.
Swimmers broke 46 records over three days at the annual championship in the central city of Da Nang.
Eu Jin Jonathan Tan, clocked the 50m freestyle, under 13 age group, in 24.90sec, for gold and a new record. He then added another gold and record in the 100m freestyle with a time in 54.82sec.
In the 1,500m division, Tan and his country's fellowman, Jun Wei Glen Lim and Vietnamese Nguyen Huu Kim Son all broke the record, but Lim was awarded gold medal and a new record with a time in 16min44.77sec.
Vietnamese Nguyen Diep Phuong Tram, 14, also took nine gold medals and broke five records for Viet Nam during the 3-day championship.
The HCM City prodigy swam the 200m freestyle, girl's under14-15 group, in 2:04.21, beating the old record (2:04.58) set four years ago by Thailand's Benjaporn Sriphanomthorn.
Tram then finished first in the 400m individual medley in 4:59.13, shaving 59 hundredths of a second off the old record set by Malaysian Sai Wai Yen seven years ago.
The teenager completed her final day with gold medal in the 50m butterfly, clocking in 27.94sec.
Vietnamese Tran Duy Khoi also contributed six golds and three records for Viet Nam at the championship. — VNS
