HA NOI (VNS) — Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Nguyen Thuy Xuan Linh won the U30 women's team gold at the ninth WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Aguascalientes, Mexico, yesterday.
The Vietnamese trio easily beat the teams from the Philippines, Turkey and Chinese Taipei to take the lead. Chinese Taipei won the silver medal and the bronze was shared by the United States and Turkey.
Vietnamese martial arts athletes also performed well in the other categories.
In the women's individual cadet category, Nguyen Thi Kim Ha and Mexico's Sofia Sepulveda bagged the bronze medal. The gold went to Korea's Su-yeong Choi, while Canada's Justina Yu took the silver.
In the U30 pair division, Mexico won the gold medal, while Chinese Taipei took the silver. Viet Nam (Tong Nguyen Bao and Lien Thi Tuyet Mai) and the United States shared the bronze medal.
In the women's individual freestyle in the over-17 category, Viet Nam's Ngo Thi Thuy Dung and Peru's Winnie Yi Wu Acuy won bronze medals. The winner was Adalis Munoz of the United States, followed by Russia's Yulia Popova.
In the U17 freestyle pair event, Vietnamese players Nguyen Dinh Khoi and Nguyen Thi Mong Quynh brought home a silver medal. China's Ming Da Hu and Meng Yue Wei teamed up to bag the gold medal. Mexico's Jose Reyes and Ibanez Ana Zulema and Russia's Mikhail Pustovit and Anastasiya Karnovich shared the bronze medal.
On the first day of the competition, which was held at the Olympic Gymnasium, South Korea won three of the nine gold medals up for grabs. Mexico, Viet Nam and the United States, as well as the Philippines, Turkey and China took home one gold medal each.
The 29-member Vietnamese team, led by Chairman of the Viet Nam Taekwondo Federation Truong Ngoc De, are competing in 24 out of 36 disciplines with the aim of winning at least two gold medals.
This year's four-day event has attracted a total of 461 poomsae athletes from 46 countries.
Viet Nam ranked second in the eighth edition of the same event held in Bali, Indonesia, last year, with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals. — VNS
