DA NANG (VNS)— Binh Duong 2 overpowered Ha Noi 1 2-nil in two single matches to qualify for the quarter-final of the National Team Tennis Tournament, Viettravel Cup, at Da Nang's Tuyen Son sports complex yesterday.

In the men's team event, top form Nguyen Hoang Hai of Binh Duong 1 beat Nguyen Dac Tien of Ha Noi 1 6-1, 6-3 in the first men's single match, while his team-mate Mai Thanh Dong beat Hanoian Hoang Bao Long 6-2, 6-2 in the second single match.

In other match, HCM City 2 team overpowered Vinh Phuc 2-0 with Le Phuoc Vinh of HCM City 2 cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nguyen Van Son, and Tran Minh Dang beating Nguyen Van Anh Tuan 6-0, 6-0.

In the men's doubles, HCM City 2's Tran Minh Dang and Nguyen Nhut Hoang took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Vinh Phuc's Nguyen Trong Tien and Tran Viet Hoang.

Ha Noi 2 edged out Kien Giang 2-1 as outdoor temperatures reached more than 40oC.

Nguyen Anh Thang scored the first single-match win for Ha Noi 2 when he beat Lam Hoang Nam 6-3, 6-2, but Tran Minh Tu of Kien Giang equalised the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Trinh Linh Giang of Ha Noi 2 in the second single match.

In the third and crucial match, Tran Quang Vu and Nguyen Anh Thang beat Lam Hoang Nam and Tran Minh Tu 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to secure a win for Ha Noi.

Hoang Thanh Trung of Binh Duong 1 beat Da Nang 2's Ho Ha Hai Nam 6-1, 6-2, while Ly Hoang Nam cruised over Le Khac Tung Lam with the same score in the second match.

Binh Duong 2 took two single matches over Ha Noi 1 (6-1, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2).

As scheduled, Binh Duong 1 will meet Ha Noi 2 in the second round match today, while HCM City 2 team play Military 1 team.

HCM City 1 also play Binh Duong 2 in today's second round.

In the women's side, Kien Giang's Thanh Thuy beat Vinh Phuc's Thuy Thuong in two sets, 6-2, 6-4, while Dong Trinh of Kien Giang also won Phuong Thao of Vinh Phuc 6-1, 6-2.

The hosts Do Dan Thi and Thanh Binh grabbed a first-round win when they beat opponents from Binh Duong in two single matches yesterday.

Do Dan Thi beat Tran Thao Anh 6-2, 6-4, while Thanh Binh won Tiffany Nguyen 6-1, 6-1.

In today's semi-final matches, Da Nang team will play HCM City 2, while HCM City 1 take on Kien Giang.

The championship, which has attracted 19 men's and women's teams competing in a knock-out formula, closes on Thursday. — VNS
