Teen player enters quarter-finals of New Zealand Championship


Young Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien progressed into the quarter-finals of the men's single category at the New Zealand 18 & Under Summer Championships after beating Australian Robert Allan in the third round yesterday.

HA NOI – Young Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien progressed into the quarter-finals of the men's single category at the  New Zealand18 & Under Summer Championships after beating Australian Robert Allan in the third round yesterday.

Although losing 2-6 in the first set to the world No. 538 junior player, Thien turned the match around to win 6-4 and 6-3 in the next two sets. The 17-year-old will compete against South Korea's Kang Ku Keon in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, Thien beat Hong Kong's Li Ming Gang and Japan's Kenta Miyoshi.

In the men's double category, the teenager and his partner Won Chun Hun from Hong Kong will meet Jake Delaney and Marc Polmans from Australia in the semi-final after beating Paramin Plodpai and Chanudom Wiriyajanyoung from Thailand in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, the couple defeated Trent Smith and Edward Cristian Stoica from New Zealand and Adam Gage-Brown and James William Lennox Southon, also from the host country.

The championship's finals will be held on Saturday, February 4 in Auckland. – VNS
