HA NOI (VNS)— Teen chess master Nguyen Anh Khoi triumphed at the World Youth Chess Championships with one round to go in Maribor City, Slovakia, early yesterday.
The Vietnamese player won in the under-10 open category with 10 points after 10 rounds.
Khoi, who is seeded No 13 at the tournament, won all his matches.
In the last round he will play Andrey Esipenko of Russia.
Khoi is the sixth winner from Viet Nam at the annual tournament for juniors.
Earlier he won a doubles at the Asian Chess Championships with two golds in the blitz and rapid chess events.
Viet Nam have taken part in the Maribor event with 12 masters in different age groups.
The most recent champ was Nguyen Minh Thang, who won the 2008 event in the boys' U8 group.
Apart from Khoi only Nguyen Thi Mai Hung of Viet Nam is in top 10.
On Saturday, Hung defeated Gevorgyan Maria of Armenia. She is currently in eighth place in the girls' U18 group with seven points and 1.5 points less than leader Goryachkina Aleksandra of Russia.
She will play Minoo Asgarizadeh from Iran in the last round and still has a chance to win a medal. — VNS
