HA NOI (VNS)— Teenager Ly Hoang Nam won the men's title at the National Tennis Championships-Viettravel Cup yesterday in Ha Noi.

Nam, 15, of Binh Duong broke once in each set to defeat Tran Hoang Anh Khoa from the Army team 6-3, 6-3 in the final, making him the youngest ever champion.

Earlier on Thursday, Nam caused a huge upset by defeating defending champion Do Minh Quan 6-4, 7-6 in the semis.

Quan had dominated national tennis for nearly 10 years, and was expected to maintain his stranglehold for the next two to three years.

Nam, who has won two titles at International Tennis Federation under-18 events, has been called up for the Asia team to take part in the Junior World Ranking Tournaments.

Tonight, he will fly to Japan for the Dunlop Japan Open Junior Championships from October 16-21, then the Osaka Mayor's Cup – World Super Junior Tennis Championships from October 22-28.

The youngster will then participate at the Lee Duk Hee Cup Chuncheon International Junior Tennis Championships in South Korea from October 30-November 4 and the Seogwipo Asian/Oceania Closed International Junior Tennis Championships from November 6-11. — VNS
