HA NOI (VNS)— Ten leading Vietnamese hair stylists will demonstrate their creative skills during a hair show and contest in Ha Noi on Thursday.

Hosted by the Italian haircare products company Davines, the contest which has been organised every five years, aims to select a Vietnamese hairstylist to vie at the Davines Worldwide Hair Tour in Paris, to be held in May of next year. The 10 local contestants have been chosen from a nationwide selection process.

The panel – including international hair stylists and fashion experts from the Dep (Beauty), Viet Nam's leading fashion publication – will judge the contestants based on professional techniques, creative ideas and knowledge of current international hair trends.

In addition to the contestants, famous Vietnamese stylists like Hoang Minh Tam, Tran Hung, Buu An and the Vietnamese winner of the Davines Worldwide Hair Tour 2007, Duc Thinh, will also showcase their newest hair creations.

Fashion designer Kelly Bui will complement the creative ideas of the hair stylists with her costumes.

"The show will not only be dedicated to the stylists' creativity but will be a magnificent feast for fashionistas," said the show's director, Viet Tu.

According to Tu, the show's script was inspired by the Greek myth of Pandora's Box about a woman who opened a jar containing all the evils of mankind, leaving only Hope inside. Therefore, the winner of the hair contest would be given a symbolic box containing the Hope, "which can help people to overcome any challenge and lead them to success", Tu said.

The Davines Hair Show & Contest will take place at the Ha Noi Opera House. The Rhapsody Philharmonic, featuring students from the Viet Nam National Academy of Music, and DJs Slim and Bnuts will offer a live soundtrack for the show.

A modern art installation by Le Huy Hoang made from cabbage sprouts, acupuncture needles, nylon threads and a Vespa scooter with a nacre-inlaid body by sculptor Dinh Cong Dat, was held last week to support the event. — VNS
