That wins gold at cycling tournament

HA NOI (VNS) — Nguyen Thi That won her first gold medal in the women's 25km individual points race at the ongoing National Sports Games' cycling tournament yesterday.

That, from An Giang, took the lead with a time of 34:11.43, followed by Nguyen Thuy Dung of Binh Duong, who has won two gold medals in this event, with a time of 34:46.21, and Dong Thap's Nguyen Thi Thanh who clocked 35:36.09. The cycling tournament is being held in the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh.

That had made Vietnamese cycling history by winning a silver medal in the recent 17th Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea.

In the men's 40km individual points race, Trinh Duc Tam of Ha Noi won the gold medal with a time of 54:59.43. The silver and bronze medals went to Mai Nguyen Hung of HCM City who clocked 55:53.36, and Huynh Thanh Tung of the Military Team who logged 56:02.69.

Today, the cyclists have a day off. Tomorrow they will compete in the women's 50km team points race and the men's 80km team points race.

About 180 cyclists from 12 teams nationwide are participating in the tournament. — VNS
