World No 11 Nguyen Tien Minh won his first men's singles match at the Viet Nam Open-Yonex Sunrise Cup in HCM City against Indonesia's Adi Pramata on Tuesday.

Pramata, ranked 264th, was hired to practise with Minh in preparation for the London Olympics, but despite knowing his opponents game well, was unable to stop him.

Minh defeated his Indonesian rival 21-7, 21-15 in just 40 minutes. He will next meet Riyanto Subagja of Indonesia.

His teammate Nguyen Hoang Nam also progressed to the next round after beating Malaysia's Chong Yee Han 21-18, 14-21, 21-15. Nam will compete against Indonesia's Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka in the second round.

In the women's singles, Viet Nam's only representative Vu Thi Trang was beaten by Yuka Kusunose of Japan. She got off to a good start taking the first set 21-16, but failed to capitalise and lost the next two sets 16-21, 8-21.-VNS
