DA NANG (VNS) — Vietnamese female badminton players Vu Thi Trang and Nguyen Thi Sen won their second round ties at the Kawasaki Viet Nam International Series 2015 in Da Nang city yesterday.
No 1 seed Trang crushed Ong Ren-Ne of Singapore 21-11, 21-6 in just 28 minutes.
World No 56 Trang will meet Chinese Taipei's Chen Su Yu, who beat Malaysian Wong Julia Pei Xian 21-18, 21-15, in the third round.
World No 562 Sen caused an upset yesterday, besting No 5 seed Malaysian Lee Zii Yii, world No 119 21-19, 21-12 in 31 minutes.
Sen's next opponent will be No 7 seed Indonesian Yeo Jia Min, world No 248.
In the men's tournament, Pham Cao Cuong defeated Mohd Razlan Shah Mohd Ridzuan Shah of Malaysia 21-19, 21-14 and Nguyen Hoang Nam beat Chang Lip Seng of Malaysia 21-5, 21-13.
Cuong will face Hardianto Kurniawan of Indonesia and Nam will play No 8 seed Enzi Shafira of Indonesia in the next round.
Meanwhile, Viet Nam's top male badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh, who didn't enter the Kawasaki tournament, moved up four places 34th in the latest Badminton World Federation world rankings, announced on Thursday.
Minh gained 4,000 ranking points by winning the men's singles title at the Sydney International 2015 in Australia, bringing his total to 33,020.
Olympian Minh will compete in the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix on October 13-18. — VNS
