HA NOI (VNS) — Vu Thi Trang won the women's singles title of the 2015 White Nights, an international badminton challenge that wrapped up at Sporthall Arena in Gatchina, Russia, yesterday.
Trang, world No 49 and seed No 5, easily beat seed No 2 Rong Schafer of the United States 21-14, 21-14 in 40 minutes at the final match.
Earlier, in the semi-final, Trang, who was born in the northern province of Bac Giang, crushed seed No 1 Linda Zetchiri of Bulgaria 21-6, 21-13 in the semi-final.
Another Vietnamese representative and seed No 1, Nguyen Tien Minh, failed to take the men's singles title after losing to seed No 7 Vladimir Malkov of Russia 21-16, 21-12 in the final match that lasted 50 minutes.
In the men's doubles event, Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia defeated Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge of England 21-10, 21-12 to take the title.
The US$150,000 competition, organised by the National Badminton Federation of Russia in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of Leningrad, attracted 202 players from 32 countries across Asia, Europe, and Pan America. — VNS
