HA NOI (VNS) — Unknown player Tran Thanh Tu defeated Grandmasters to win the men's gold medal at the National Rapid Chess Championships, which ended in HCM City on May 3.
Tu, of Can Tho, beat teammates Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Nguyen Duc Hoa and Hanoians Le Tuan Minh and Tran Tuan Minh.
Tu won seven of nine matches to get eight points, followed by Hoa with 7.5 points and Son with seven points.
In the women's category, Can Tho's Pham Le Thao Nguyen beat Luong Phuong Hanh of Ha Noi to win the gold medal with eight points.
Nguyen Thi Thanh An of HCM City grabbed the silver medal with 7.5 points, and the bronze medal went to Hanoian Hanh, who had seven points.
In the mixed doubles category, HCM City bagged the gold medal.
Earlier, Can Tho's Son and Hanoian Hoang Thi Bao Tram won gold medals in the men's and women's events, respectively, at the National Blitz Chess Championships. — VNS
