HA NOI (VNS) — Thach Kim Tuan, on Saturday, set two new records at the International Weighlif-ting Federation Junior World Championships organised in Kazan, Russia.

The Vietnamese triumphed in the men's U56kg category in all three events of snatch, clean&jerk and total.

The 20-year-old athlete lifted 133kg on his second attempt in the snatch, which was 1kg heavier than the old record by Long Qingquan of China set up in 2008. The gold and the record were a strong force for the SEA Games champion, who continued his perfect performance in the clean & jerk with a lift of 160kg on the second attempt.

Tuan failed to make it to the 163kg category. However, it was enough for him to secure a gold medal as his nearest rival Kruaithong Sinphet of Thailand could only lift 146kg.

Tuan's total weight of 293kg is a new world record, and 1kg better than Long's result at the Beijing Olympics six years ago.

In the 2011 championships , Tuan grabbed one bronze medal. Previously, his best achievement was three bronze medals at the world championships in Poland last year.

The Kazan competition had 264 lifters from 49 countries and territories competing in seven categories each, for men and women. Tuan was the only one from Viet Nam. — VNS
