Tuyen seizes taekwondo bronze

HA NOI (VNS)—Truong Thi Kim Tuyen bagged a third medal for Viet Nam yesterday at the Nanjing Asian Youth Games held in China.

Tuyen seized the bronze medal in the girls' taekwondo under-47kg category after losing 4-9 to China's Fu Yu in the semi-final.

Fu then beat Thailand's Wongpattanakit Panipak to take the gold.

In tennis, Ly Hoang Nam advanced to the men's singles semi-final. The No 4 seed struggled in the first set before coming back in the second to defeat Yang Shao-chi of Chinese Taipei, 7-5, 6-4.

He will meet unseeded rival Popko Dimitri of Kazakhstan in the semi final, who secured his spot after title favourite, Zheng Wei Qiang of China, withdrew after succumbing to injury.

The Viet Nam Tennis Federation is bracing itself for a place in the finals with hopes for Nam to bring home the gold medal.

The other semi final will see Garvit Batra, of the Independent Olympic Athletes team, face off against No 2 seed, Jurence Zosimo Mendoza of the Philippines.

On Tuesday, Vietnamese swimming star Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won a silver medal at the Asian Youth Games in Nanjing, China, after finishing second in the girls' 100m backstroke event.

Vien achieved the best time in qualifying by finishing in 1:03:58. The Can Tho-born girl then achieved 1:03.46, securing second place behind South Korean Im Dasol, who finished the race in 1:03.08.

In four days of competing, Viet Nam have secured two silver medals and is ranked 17 on the leader board.

Host China topped the medal tally with 32 gold, 16 silver and 13 bronze medals. The two runners-up were South Korea and North Korea, respectively. — VNS
