HA NOI — The Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) has rejected a new name, V-Super League, for the national top-flight football championship.

The tournament has been running for two months as the Super League, named by the Viet Nam Professional Football Company (VPF) who have now taken charge of managing the league.

The name was rejected by sport leaders who said it did not show the origins of the event and asked to revert back to the former title of V-League.

The VPF however did not want the old name but proposed the V-Super League, explaining that the national football tournament had been growing remarkably since its inception which would make the former name unsuitable.

The VPF said the league would benefit from being called the V-Super League, while the first division competition would be renamed V-League 1.

After receiving the proposal, the VFF immediately responded that they did not accept it and asked the VPF to follow the VFF's guidance.

According to Pham Van Tuan, deputy head of the National Administration of Sports and Physical Training, the VPF could use any name they wished for premier league, but that it should reflect the country.

"Any change can be made after the rules and regulations of the National Football Tournaments 2012 has been approved," Tuan said.

"At present, the regulations are still being drawn up, so it is mandatory to call the championship the V-League."

Tuan also stressed there would be a fine for VPF if they did not obey the decision.

Vuong Bich Thang, head of administration for the league, said the name of the tournament must be accepted by VFF. It would then be submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for approval. — VNS
