HA NOI (VNS) — Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien aims to advance to the top eight at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016.
Vien officially won her berth at the Games after grabbing two Standard As at the Asian Games in South Korea last October. At the Incheon competitions, Vien bagged two bronze medals in the women's 400m medley and 200m backstroke events.
Vien, who is training in the US, will pocket three to five other Standard As during her intensive training period in 2015-16, according to Dinh Viet Hung, general secretary of the Viet Nam Aquatic Association.
"We have not satisfied with what she has done. We hope to get better results after this long-term course," Hung said. "In Brazil, Vien is expected to be one of the best eight athletes in up to two of her events. She is encouraged to vie for a top five position."
This year, her most important duty is winning at the Singapore SEA Games. She will also take part in national tournaments in the US as well as international competitions. — VNS
