HA NOI (VNS) — Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien remains undefeated in the bid for the Best Athlete of 2014 title.
Vien, 18, who is part of the military team, received the award today after winning 1,077 points from national sport experts and journalists, who gathered together yesterday in Ha Noi, Da Nang and HCM City in a vote organised annually by The Thao Viet Nam (Viet Nam Sports) newspaper.
This is Vien's second consecutive victory for this award. Last year, she won with 916 points.
The Can Tho Province-born swimmer won over the voters with her outstanding performance while training and competing.
Having received strong support and as a result of her training in the United States, Vien has shown remarkable progress. This year, she won two bronzes at the Asian Games in South Korea, one gold at the Youth Olympic Games in China, 18 titles at the national championships and 18 titles at the ASEAN competition. Seeded amongst the world's top 10 in the 400m medley event, the girl has also set many regional and national records.
She will compete in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Coming in second in the top 10 ranking of the Best Athletes of 2014 is Hoang Xuan Vinh.
The marksman from the military team grabbed 975 points, followed by weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan of HCM City with 944 points.
Both of them will compete in the Olympics in Brazil.
The Best Coach of 2014 is Huynh Huu Chi, who coaches weightlifters in HCM City.
Chi played a key role in helping his player Tuan win two silvers at the Asian Games, one gold and two silvers at the world championships, and three titles and three records at the world youth event.
His runners-up are Dang Anh Tuan (swimming) with 424 points and Nguyen Thi Nhung (shooting) with 234 points.
The organisers also honoured swimmer Vo Thanh Tung as the Best Athlete with Disabilities of 2014.
Tung from HCM City pocketed five gold medals and three records at the Asian Paragames in Incheon.
Asian Paragames weightlifting champion Le Van Cong of HCM City came second due to the gold medal and world record he achieved in Incheon in October.
Also from HCM City, swimmer Nguyen Thanh Trung finishes third. He grabbed two titles at the Asian Paragames.
Only three coaches were nominated to compete for the Best Coach of Athletes with Disabilities of 2014. The winner is Dong Quoc Cuong, a swimming coach, from HCM City with 455 points. — VNS
