HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam took the lead at the Southeast Asian Karatedo Championship in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Can Tho.

The team bagged 14 gold, 22 silver and 30 bronze medals to grab the first position. Thailand finished second with nine gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals, while Indonesia came third with nine gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.

Viet Nam organised the event very well. All matches were fair and full of enthusiasm, said Mohamed Anffin, head of the Malaysian team.

He added that the "Vietnamese athletes showed their sporting spirit. Many injured athletes tried to play well and achieved good results. Viet Nam's first rank is completely well-deserved."

The three-day event attracted 203 athletes from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and the hosts Viet Nam. They competed for 39 sets of medals.

Laos is scheduled to host the next event in 2015. — VNS
