HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam defeated Switzerland 4-1 in the first match of the Badminton World Federations Sudirman Cup yesterday in China.

Duo Le Ha Anh and Dao Manh Thang needed only 23 minutes to beat Anthony Dumartheray and Oliver Schaller 21-13, 21-15 in the men's doubles match.

The Swiss levelled the result, when Sabrina Jaquet trounced Viet Nams female No 1 player Vu Thi Trang 21-15, 21-12 in the women's singles match.

However, that was all the Swiss could do yesterday.

World No 29 Nguyen Tien Minh easily defeated Christian Kirchmayr 21-9, 21-8 in a nearly 30-minute men's singles match.

His win was a strong motivator that helped teammates Nguyen Thi Sen and Pham Nhu Thao to come from behind and win 18-21, 21-15, 23-21 over Cendrine Hantz and Sabrina Jaquet in the women's doubles match.

Earlier, Duong Bao Duc and Thai Thi Hong Gam overcame Celine Burkart and Oliver Schaller 19-21, 21-16, 21-17 in the mixed doubles event.

In the second round tomorrow, Viet Nam will face Italy, who lost 1-4 to Australia in another Group B, level 3, match yesterday. — VNS
