HA NOI — Viet Nam defeated Thailand's U23 squad in their third match at the International Women's Volleyball Tournament – VTV Cup in the southern province of Bac Lieu on July 27.
Helped by the outstanding performance of veterans Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa and Do Thi Minh, the team won 25-22, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21.
It is Viet Nam's third win in a row in this event. They are sure to enter the semi-final round.
Viet Nam will next meet China's Liaoning.
Six teams, including five foreign teams, are competing in a round-robin format in the tournament. The top four will compete in the semi-final.
The winners will walk away with US$10,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive $7,000 and $5,000, respectively. — VNS

VN lose opening game of U16 football tournament
HA NOI – Viet Nam's U16 football team lost 1-0 to Malaysia in their first Southeast Asian U16 Football Championship Group A match in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on July 27.
In the other Group A matches of the day, Laos stunned Thailand 1-0 and Timor-Leste drew 2-2 with Brunei.
Group B has Singapore, Myanmar, the Philippines and Australia, besides hosts Cambodia. The Group B matches began on July 28.
Viet Nam have won the event twice in 2006 and 2010, ever since the championship began in 2002. – VNS
