Viet Nam and Singapore will co-host the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup.

HA NOI (VNS)- Viet Nam and Singapore will co-host the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup, according to the ASEAN Football Federation.

Viet Nam will host games at the My Dinh National Stadium, where they won their highest title in 2008 and Singapore, the defending champions, will host group matches at their new Sports Hub Stadium, which is expected to be completed in a year's time, the federation said after its meeting in Malaysia on Wednesday.

Singapore claimed a record fourth title when they beat Thailand over two legs in the final last December.

It is also the third time Singapore, whose national team was named the Men's National Team of the Year, have been named host or co-host of the event, while Viet Nam will be hosting the event for the fourth time. The first three times were in 1998, 2004 and 2010.

The biennial Suzuki Cup previously featured eight Southeast Asia teams split into two groups, with the top two from each contesting home and away leg semi-finals and finals.

This year a new regulation will be applied as Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Tengku Abdullah ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah, AFC vice president, stated all teams in the region were allowed to take part in the finals. No qualifying round has been organised.

The highly-anticipated ASEAN Super League is all set to launch in 2015, the Vice President confirmed at the same meeting.

"We would like to highlight that we have approved the launch of an ASEAN Super League in 2015 featuring two clubs from each country," he said.

"Details of the league are still being discussed but as for now the competition will be based on a franchise concept and ideally 16 teams will participate. and each team will be allowed two Asian players plus three non-Asian players.

"We hope a good quality league can encourage ASEAN football clubs to improve and that eventually we can improve our national teams," he added.

The regional super league is expected to boost the quality of football in the region and feature 16 teams, two clubs from each participating league, likely to be Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Viet Nam.

The ASEAN Super League was first suggested three years ago as a viable option to compete with the bigger leagues in Asia, but its developments had been cloaked in secrecy until now.

In Viet Nam, the Viet Nam Professional Football Company has yet to list selection criteria for its representatives. — VNS
