Viet Nam won a gold medal in badminton on the last competition day of the sixth ASEAN School Games in the Philippines yesterday.
The second-seeded pair of Do Tuan Duc and Pham Hoang Nam won in the men's doubles after the top-seeded pair of Andhika Rahmadiansyah and Rinov Rivaldi of Indonesia withdrew.
It was a big victory for the team, as it was the first time Viet Nam had a representative in the Games' badminton event. The gold medal in badminton was the 11th for Viet Nam, which ranked fifth among seven participating teams.
Viet Nam stayed on top of the rankings when it hosted the Games last year. Malaysia took the top spot with 41 gold medals, followed by Thailand with 35 and Indonesia with 15.
Nearly 4,000 athletes took part in nine sporting events in the annual Games this year. The next Games will be held in Brunei. — VNS
