Viet Nam Olympic Committee elects new chief

The Viet Nam Olympic Committee (VOC) has selected the man to take it forward over the next five years as the body set its sights on a Vietnamese gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

HA NOI – (VNS) The Viet Nam Olympic Committee (VOC) has selected the man to take it forward over the next five years as the body set its sights on a Vietnamese gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The ambitious goal will be the responsibility of Minister for Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh, who was elected as President of the VOC at its National Congress in Ha Noi yesterday.

At the 4th congress delegates reviewed the Committee's contributions to promoting the country's image to the world as Mr Hoang Vinh Giang, Vice President of the Viet Nam Olympic Committee said the committee has worked closely with relevant agencies and sport associations to expand the sports movement and improve the quality of some sport categories to match those in Asia and the world.

In the period 2012-16, the VOC will continue to prepare sports delegations to attend the Sea Games 2013 and 2015, ASIAD 2014 and 2016 Olympics. The VOC also said it would do its best to help Viet Nam sport delegations to be ranked 13th at the 17th ASIAD in Korea and 3rd at SEA Game 28th in Singapore, as well as winning a gold medal at 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

The VOC also said it will be active in mobilising fund resources to invest in infrastructure for sport activities and continue to broaden its international co-operation with international sport organisations. One of the major tasks for the VOC will be to compete to host ASIAD 18 in 2019.

The VOC also admitted its failings during the period 2008-12, such as a lack of objectives and development plans for ASIAD and Olympics activities, as well as co-ordination issues between the VOC and domestic sport associations – VNS
