HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam reached its target and finished among the top four at the seventh ASEAN Para Games, following the final day of competition yesterday in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
The final tally showed the Vietnamese winning 48 gold medals and standing fourth behind Indonesia, with 99 gold medals; Thailand, with 96 gold medals and Malaysia with 50 gold medals.
Track-and-field athletes opened the final day with Viet Nam's Nguyen Thi Hai winning a gold medal in the women's F57 javelin event.
According to coach Dang Van Phu, her score of 24.88m was higher than the world record of 23m.
It was the second title for Hai, after winning her first gold medal in the discus event on Friday.
Hai's boyfriend, Cao Ngoc Hung, also won two gold medals and set a Para
Games record in the men's discus with a score of 47.88m.
Nguyen Thi Thuy followed Hai to the top of the podium after winning the women's T44 100m event. Thuy ran 15.84 seconds to set a new Para Games record, some 0.82sec better than the former record that she set nine years ago in the Philippines.
It was the third gold medal won in Myanmar by the 40-year-old athlete, who previously won in the long jump and 200m categories.
The last medal won by the Vietnamese team was awarded to the women's table tennis squad, defeating Indonesia 3-2 in a tough final match. — VNS
