HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam will play Turkmenistan in the opening Group B match of the Davis Cup's Group Three Asia/Oceania zone in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, today. The other teams are Syria and Cambodia.
Group A gathers hosts Malaysia, Hong kong, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Viet Nam and Malaysia are the top seeds in each group.
Teams will compete in a round-robin format with the two top ones advancing to the next knock-out round.
Two overall best squads will be promoted to Group II in 2016, while the two teams with the worst results will be relegated to Group 4.
Viet Nam's four best players, Ly Hoang Nam, Nguyen Hoang Thien, Do Minh Quan and Lam Quang Tri under captain Truong Quoc Bao, will be asked to compete in Group Two next season.
Nam, the national No 1, had a double win at the 25th Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup (I) ITF Junior Tennis Championship (Grade 1), also in Malaysia.
Earlier he made an impact at the Australian Open's junior competition as the first Vietnamese entering the second round.
Nam jumped 15 places from world junior No 49 to No 34 in the latest International Tennis Federation (ITF) rankings.
It is the highest rank ever achieved by a Vietnamese tennis player.
Nam and Thien will be key players competing in the singles matches.
They will be supported by veteran Quan who has been studying tennis in the US. The 15-time national winner will make a perfect pair with Tri in the doubles matches.
The tournament will be wrapped up on March 28. — VNS
