Viet Nam win first Games medal

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam's Tran Tuan Quynh and Nguyen Anh Tu won a bronze medal in the men's doubles event in the table tennis at the 28th Southeast Asian Games yesterday.

It is the first medal the Vietnamese delegation has won at the Games.

The duo lost to Singapore's Gao Ning and Li Hu 1-11, 7-11, 6-11, 2-11 in the semi-final to take bronze.

Earlier, Quynh and Tu beat Cambodian pair Lim Sok Long and Nay Saravey 11-6, 12-10, 11-7 in their quarter-final.

Singapore got its first gold medal at the 28th SEA Games from Lin Ye and Zhou Yihan, who won the table tennis women's doubles yesterday.

They beat their more fancied counterparts, Feng Tianwei, a 2008 and 2012 Olympic medallist, and Yu Mengyu 11-7, 5-11, 8-11, 10-12, 11-3, 12-10, 7-11 in the all-Singapore final at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The singles event also began yesterday, with Singapore's women posting easy victories in their respective round robin matches.

Isabelle Li beat Myanmar's San Khin Kaung 11-4, 11-1, 11-1, while Feng Tianwei, the world No 4, took out Philippines Ian Lariba 11-6, 11-6, 11-2.

Former SEA Games silver medallist Le Tien Dat of Viet Nam beat Lat Thet Ko Ko of Myanmar 11-5, 11-7, 11-7 in the first round in the men's pool.

In the other SEA Games news, Vietnamese duo Huynh Minh Trang and Pham Manh Nhi finished fifth with a total score of 65.8011, while the other Vietnamese pair Nguyen Thi Minh Xuan and Tang Bao Tran ended seventh out of eight teams in the qualifying round for women's synchronised swimming at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. — VNS
