HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam won one gold, two silver and six bronze medals at the 14th Asian Cadet, Junior & U-21 Karate Championships 2014 yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The single gold medal was won by Nguyen Thi Viet Trinh in the girls' kumite category.
Nguyen Thi Phuong came second in the kata event for 14-to-15 year-old girls.
Tran Pham Viet Thong lost to Alduwailah Abduullateef of Kuwait in the boy's U63kg category.
Viet Nam ranked sixth out of the 28 teams participating in the event. Iran topped the podium, winning 13 gold medals, followed by Japan with nine gold medals and Kazakhstan with two gold medals.
According to Vu Son Ha, head of the Karate Department of the National Sports Administration, the tournament was an important opportunity for young players to sharpen their skills as well as prepare their mind for future competitions. — VNS
