HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Anh Minh hit another milestone in his career and also the country's history as the first Vietnamese player to take part in The Amateur Championship, the oldest and one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur titles for male golfers in the world.

The teenager is the national No 1 player and a key player for the national team, participating and winning in various international tournaments.

At the 130th tournament which is also known as the British Amateur and hosted by The R&A, Minh will compete against 287 rivals from 38 countries and regions over stroke play in the first two rounds.

The best 64 will then take part in the match play at Royal St George and Royal Cinque Ports on June 16-21.

Both courses have recent experience of hosting the iconic event, with Harry Ellis taking the title at Royal St George's in 2017 and Garrick Porteous triumphing at Cinque Ports in 2013.

Royal St George has also played host to The Open on 15 occasions, more than any other English venue, while Royal Cinque Ports staged the Championship in 1909 and 1920.

Some of golf’s greatest names have triumphed, including Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal.

The winner will secure places at the Open and the US Open, and by tradition, an invitation to play at the Masters Tournament. — VNS
